From the Ground Up
Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company has its headquarters five miles outside the small town of Mansfield, Missouri. Owner Jere Gettle built a replica of a pioneer village and named it Bakersville. His home sits at one end of a large Italian-style garden. A seed store, restaurant, jail, apothecary, flour mill, blacksmith and several other structures surround the garden. Down the hill from the village is the warehouse where most of the sales are processed. Catalogs are big in the seed industry, and Gettle’s company sells over 1,500 seed varieties which are processed by workers wielding tablet computers while wearing old-timey clothing. Here, Gettle and horticulturist, Art Davidson, talk about the future of food and what drives their work at Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company.
